He and wife Faye Grant have a daughter named Kate.

His full name is Stephen Weaver Collins. His middle name, Weaver, is a family name on his mother's side. His great-great grandfather was General James B. Weaver, the 1880 Greenback party candidate and the 1892 Populist party candidate for President of the United States. In 1892 General Weaver won 22 electorial votes.

Starred in Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979). His "7th Heaven" (1996) television series co-star Catherine Hicks, starred in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986).

Reverend Eric Camden, Collins's character on "7th Heaven" (1996), was ranked #11 in TV Guide's list of the "50 Greatest TV Dads of All Time" [20 June 2004 issue].

He is a practitioner of Transcendental Meditation.

Said in an interview that he felt very much like an outsider during the filming of Star Trek The Motion Picture (1979), where he played Commander Will Decker, a feeling that he actually tried to capitalize on in his characterization of Decker.

His wife Faye Grant is also an actress who played the character 'Rhonda' on the series "The Greatest American Hero" (1980).
